ABOUT COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is located in Central America, tucked between Nicaragua and Panama and bathed by both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. More than half the population lives on the Central Valley, a plateau with an equitable climate. It is rimmed to the southwest by the Cordillera range, and provides the setting for the country’s capital, San José. There are lowlands on both coastlines, mainly swampy on the Caribbean coast, with grassland savannah on the Pacific side merging into mangrove towards the south. Rivers cut through the mountains, flowing down to both the Caribbean and the Pacific and offering excellent conditions for rafting and kayaking.

Costa Rica was discovered by Columbus on his third voyage to the New World but was promptly overlooked by European settlers due to its rough conditions and the fierce resistance of local Indians. It was not until the late 18th century that conditions started to improve with the consolidation of wheat and tobacco plantations and the subsequent cultivation of coffee.

Within the last two decades, Costa Rica has become the Mecca of ecotourism. With a large percentage of its territory protected as national parks and/or wildlife refuges, and a strong initiative to regulate visits and development in its territory, the country has become a model to its neighbors and to the international community. Costa Rica has a stunning variety of landscapes and microclimates, which help create varied and spectacular vacations. In the central highlands, the most important attractions are its active volcanoes such as Arenal and the cloud forests of Monteverde. There are two main rainforests located on the Caribbean basin (Tortuguero) and in the South Pacific (Osa Peninsula). The golden sand beaches of the Central and North Pacific provide excellent conditions for water sports including snorkeling, surfing, kayaking and scuba diving.
